Aylaliya Birru served over four years in a California prison for assaulting her husband, a former Marine who was physically and emotionally abusive. Aylaliya, like many women, was punished for defending herself from an abuser. She was sentenced to six years in prison, but as an immigrant, Aylaliya also faces deportation as a result of her felony conviction. And because Aylaliya is Black, she is more than three times as likely to be deported on criminal grounds than other immigrants. In April, a federal immigration judge ordered Aylaliya removed from the US, and she is now being held by ICE in a county jail. As she awaits news of a possible pardon, let’s show her our support and love and let her know we are thinking of her.
