Revolutionary Fiction: Octavia Butler’s Parable Novels

“Octavia once told me that two things worried her about the future of humanity: The tendency to think hierarchically, and the tendency to place ourselves higher on the hierarchy than others.” —Steven Barnes

“This was a cautionary tale, although people have told me it was prophecy.” ––Octavia Butler

Published in 1993 and 1998, Butler’s Parable novels are set in a dystopic near future and follow Lauren Olamina’s quest to form a revolutionary community. In the wreckage of climate change and economic collapse, California is burning and people are fighting for basic resources and land. But what begins as Olamina’s route to survival soon leads to something much more: a vision of human destiny and the birth of Earthseed, a belief system that exalts change as its ultimate doctrine.
