Gender roles are a cage, defined by structures of power rather than any trait we assign to gender. We can’t create a liberated world without destroying the forces that violently maintain our adherence to this impossible binary.
This reading group is focused on exploring the embodied experience of gender, the social structures reinforcing it, and different ways that people have resisted the patriarchy. This reading group is not an academic exercise, a debate club, or a social group. People are already dying and people are already fighting. This reading is to advance our ability to resist the truama’s inflicted daily by patriarchy and its partners, learn to build something that is different than the gendered nightmare we live in, and learn to more effectively fight back against our oppressors.
Thursday 7/25/19 8:30pm
This first meeting of the gender and queer theory reading group will focus on three (relatively short) readings.
– The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle The Master’s House – Audre Lorde
– Toward the Queerest insurrection – The Mary Nardini Gang
– One Is Not Born A Woman – Monique Wittig
